PSY 3960: Autism Pre-Practicum

Spring 2008 Syllabus
Recruitment PowerPoint

Undergraduates take the Pre-Practicum course for the last 7 weeks of the semester before they plan on taking their practicum, PSY 3570.  In Pre-Practicum, they are given a general background of Croyden Avenue School, an introduction to autism, and some basic training in discrete trial therapy, which is the basis of the AI classroom that they will be in for the next few months.  The Pre-Practicum system also provides an opportunity for the students to visit Croyden to get a tour, practice taking data, and even run some procedures with some of the children.  Also, the Pre-Practicum course is offered for incoming Master’s students who haven’t had any previous experience with Croyden or that haven’t been there in a long time.

To help students be more prepared for their Practicum experience, we are going to incorporate an extra mandatory visit to Croyden starting in the fall 2008 semester, which will bring the visit number up to four.  For students who are planning on taking the practicum in the semester immediately following their Pre-Practicum course, we will offer an additional fifth optional visit, which will allow the student to experience an entire two hour Croyden shift.  They will get experience with using the daily schedule, and they will also get multiple opportunities to take their children on transitions to hone their skills.
